Superbowl Ads?

Umm, no okay, the fact that we're spending 3 billion dollars on ADVERTISEMENTS is unbelievably rediculous! We talk about making our country/world cleaner, helping out in africa and stopping aids/HIV or finding a cure for cancer but instead, oh lets just blow 3 billion dollars on a 30 second commercial people might only see once during the ENTIRE show. Makes sense right? I don't agree with the fact that they spend that amount of money on ads, i don't agree with the fact that people are willing to spend that much money on ads and i don't agree with the fact that people don't really care that 3 billion dollars is being wasted.I honestly think people need to get a grip on reality and realise that a 30 second commercial isn't going to save the world.

Technological Advancement?

It's almost mandatory to have a laptop for collage or university. I should know because two of my sisters are currently attending their first year at collage. It's amazing how much money is put into alot of usless things. In one of the videos posted on the Media Central blog, they mentioned spending a huge amount of money on books that they barely or never use. It's rediculous because the books that the college students buy are hundreds of dollars and do they use them that often? No, even my sister who is attending collage for Nursing said that she barely uses them. So why are we paying huge amounts of money for something that we never use?

I honestly disagree that technology will improve or make things easier. With technology growing, we will barely have time to keep up with the advancements "needed" in schools. Every year, things change, technology grows and more jobs are needed. But how can we keep up if all this technology is taking over the use of books and notebooks? We have programs that read to us, how much is our education going to change if everything is computerized?
Although it's easier and faster, i'd rather be smarter by actually learning then just to have it right in front of me on a screen. You're better off smart than stupid.

I watched a few films, such as Marianne's Theatre (http://www.nfb.ca/film/mariannes_theatre/), Citizen Harold(http://www.nfb.ca/film/citizen_harold/) and Cactus Swing(http://www.nfb.ca/film/cactus_swing) and all three of them were really good. my favorite one was definatly Marianne's Theatre.

My favorite is was Marianne's Theatre because even though there was no voices, you could still understand and see the feeling and depth to the whole movie. It was amazing the way they used what looked or seemed like construction paper to make some of the characters. The acrobats were amazing and the way they showed the personality of all of them really made the whole movie come to life. It was beautiful and amazing. To some maybe it seemed really boring or stupid because the concept of the movie wasn't maybe shown as much as it should have but i thought they made this movie amazingly. The was the Ring Leader would get upset but still be happy or proud of his acrobats was perfect because of the way they demostrated love into a preformance.

Citizen Harold wasn't the second best short film i watched. I didn't particulary like it because it was kind of boring and the actual animation of the film was, to me, terrible. Alot of the film didn't make too much sence or it was too overwhelming. Example when he went to the bar it was hard to understand everything that everyone was saying. Most of the things the men were saying sounded more like mumbles than actual words. I think it showed how most people don't do anything when they face a problem. Most people don't even bother with something when it's bothering them, or they give up after trying once.

Cactus Swing was a comical and amusing short film for me. Although it didn't have much depth to it, it added a fun twist on the serious films i had watched previously. I thought the way they united all the animals of the desert was interesting because even though i don't think there was much of a meaning to this movie, it could be a metaphor for people coming together just for a little while in harmony.

Photoshopping: Shopping for a "perfect" image.

Alot of people don't realise that probably all of the images we see today on magazines aren't even real.

If you look in a magazine you see, what some girls or people call, perfect images of women that are potrayed as beautiful. I'm sorry but that's not even real. We base ourselves on an image that is extremely unattainable and we think it's okay.

The fact is, it's not okay. We portray women that aren't even really real, the model just gives them a stencil and then editors fix the "imperfections". It's not right. We all see photos in magazines telling us to "embrace the real you" but how can we when the images that say are, aren't even the real thing. They're fake, false, wrong. It's impossible to look the way the magazine shows us so why are we showing these photos to the world?

A little photoshopping is 0kay, but when you're making someones neck longer, cheeks thinner, eyes bigger...is it really that person still or is it a false image that people believe to be a real person.

They aren't real. How can they be real? The person that is being photographed is an entirely different person from the image being photoshopped. That girl's legs aren't that long, his muscles aren't that big and no, her body isn't that tan. Women, especially teenage girls are being brought up in a world where "the perfect woman" is literally unattainable. I myself am a teenage girl and it's hard seeing all these images that look so amazing, so beautiful but not being able to ever be like that is the hardest. Girls are so caught up in that image is all that matters when it's honestly not.

Photoshopping is fake, unattainable and unrealistic.

Media, it's impact on my life.

I don't mind the media, it's impact has changed peoples lives. For the good and the bad. I'm not saying i don't use the media alot, i do. Infact i always use media text. The computer is a huge one for me. I use it almost everyday. The days i don't use the computer, i'm usually at my brothers or at a friends house. But that doesn't stop me from using other media texts.

Alot of kids will watch tv, a movie, listen to music or use their cell phones. I don't have a cell phone and even though i wish i did, i know the downfalls of such a device. I know that alot of kids say they "would die" without their cell phones. Has society really become so dependent on an inanimate object? Yes we have. we spend more time on the computer, watching tv or on our cell phones then out with friends. I may be contradicting myself but it's true. I use my computer alot to talk to people, instead of on the phone or in person. We depend so much on something that doesn't do much for us. We blame fast food and alcohol for our problems. Have we seen what's on the media?

Kids who think they are fat are posed to see these gorgeous "perfect" models on tv and they blame that for anorexia or belimia. No, i know it has an impact on the way people feel about themselves, but so does fast food. Media is so deadly and we don't even realise it. You see car chases, people getting shot, blown up, drug deals, harmful situations, rape scenes, sex scenes, brutal beating all on either the tv or on movies. Parents let kids watch these things and they don't think it's all that bad because they've grown up with it. Desensitization is what the media has done to us.

Not only does the televison do this, but the internet does too. There are games on the internet that involve killing animals. Example, Kitten Cannon. You blast a kitten out of a cannon and see how far it goes while hitting trampolines, barrels of gasoline and missles to make you have a farther distance. All the while, you're hoping your kitten doesn't hit a giant venus fly trap that eats the kitten and huge spikes that stab the cat, therefore ending the distance you have managed to blast your kitten at. Really? Kids play this game? It's discusting. We all have an issue of animal rights, well is this really demonstrating the way we should treat our animals. Kids who play this game at a young age aren't going to realise it's bad, that the kittens not going to be hurt. Um...this means what? They're going to try it out. Oh yeah, that's perfect...seeing your child fling a cat across the lawn while setting up random things as obstecles. Seriously? We're letting people see these things, these games and certain website. A.K.A. porn. Sure, many of the guys who read this will laugh but there's pop ups and if you click on certain things, porn sites come up and kids younger than what, 11, 12? see these websites. If i ever have kids, i don't want them to open up a computer, start clicking on random stuff then find a porn website. It's not funny, it's discusting to think that people set those kind of things up.

And cell phones, i can't really say much about those because i don't have one. But i know alot of people have been caught up in stupid things because of cell phones. You can buy ringtones, you can text to play yor favorite song on the radio. Everything is based around cell phones now. Any survey at school will mention something about cell phones. And i just don't see why they are all that important. Sometimes i want a cell phone, other times i don't because i know alot of people who regret getting one.

I'm not saying media is a bad thing because some of it isn't. Cell phones have been helping everything that has been happening in Haiti because if you text a certain number, money goes toward their needs. Radios, television and the internet have been helping in supporting countries in need. Tv shows are put in place to boost self confedence or helping people. Work out videos and tv shows like Maury...don't really help. Work out videos are made to make you feel as if you NEED that video to lose weight. No, you don't. Maury blows everything out of proportion and shows you how unhealthy certain peoples relationships or lives are. It's devestating.

The next time you turn on the tv, the internet, a movie or text someone, think about the impact it's having on your live, whether or not you can see it.
